For best results plant heathers in groups of one variety, avoid straight rows and too many varieties in a small area

Planting distances vary depending on the vigour of the plant and personal preferences. For quick ground cover an average planting distance is 18" (45cm) apart = approx 6 plants per sq yd. Small cushion plants like Foxii nana etc, can be planted closer. Planting at approximately 6 plants per sq yd, would give you ground cover in approximately 2-3 years, depending on location, soil conditions etc.

Water all plants thoroughly before removing from the pot. Spread a 4/5cm (2-3 inch) layer of moist peat over the ground and using a hand trowel, plant 'through' the peat, letting it trickle into the hole and mix with the soil. Always aim for a 50:50 peat soil mix. Plant deep enough to have the base of the foilage nestling on the peaty soil, working some of it into the crown. Firm the soil well avoiding excessive pressure. It is vital to prevent drying out, particularly during the first year of planting. Water thoroughly in dry conditions.

Once established, apply a 2-3cm (1") layer of moist peat or composted bark over the beds and around the plant.
